American Idol - Final 4 (Elvis Week)

by @ 9:56 pm. Filed under American Idol

Welcome to the American Idol Final 4 Week.

Sorry wrong season…

Looking back at Season 3 (when Malaysia got it’s first taste of American Idol), I must say it was pretty awesome to see an all-ladies group. La Toya London (4th place) who blew everyone away with her workshop performance of All By Myself, was the (UNarguably) the best singer in the competition and actually already has an album out (a flop). Jasmine Trias (3th place) was an obvious fluke but probably was one of the first great achivement by the VoteForTheWorst crew. Nobody really cares what she’s doing right now. I was a hardcore fan of Diana DeGarmo (runner up) since I heard her performance of Broken Wing during country week, and so far is the only AI contestant to ever really blew me away (a must watch of her Final 3 performance). However, in hindsight, Fantasia was the right winner over her. After listening to her debut album of bubble gum pop rubbish (also a flop), she still have a lot of maturing to do. Fantasia, well you all know where she is now.

Sorry wrong again…

Season 4 when almost every Malaysian caught the show from the get go, was a weird mix. Look at the final four. How Anthony Federov (Final 4) reached that place, I’ll never know. And no, he wasn’t one of the VTFW picks. Vonzell Solomon (3rd place) was not the best singer in the competition, however, she did show tremendous growth over the competition (remember her take on Whitney’s song near the end?). But, you can sorta tell ThePowersThatBe wanted to pitch a final two battle between Bo Bice (2nd place) and Carrie Underwood (’winner’). I’m a little surprised they didn’t take on the Osmond’s I’m A Little Bit Country, I’m A Little Bit Rock n Roll duet. Bo got a late start in the music sales but his latest song ‘The Real Thing’ is gaining lots of local airplay recently, and it is a tad weird to hear him comforming his style to manufactured Idol material. I have high hopes for him, once his contract with Idol is done, he will follow Kelly Clarkson’s way. As for Miss Underwood, you know where she is now. And if you think Carrie really deserved the win over Bo, you’re crazy.

Aaaahh here we are. Yep.. that’s right. This year’s final 4 of American Idol. So how do these group of kids stack up to the alumni? I have to say, pretty darn good. Out of the four left (despite my obvious disdain for a certain egghead), I have to say, they are all pretty damn good performers. For once, everyone in the Final Four spot deserves to be there. And I really have a hard time figuring out who could be the next Idol cause they are all fabulously wonderful in their own ways.
Anyway, on to this week’s show. A tribute to the original American Idol - Elvis Presley.

Taylor Hicks - Jailhouse Rock.
Excellent. His spasticness really felt at home with this song. What a way to start the show. It was energetic and entertaining and he was spot on with his vocals. Superb. Great job. A 9.
Taylor Hicks - In The Ghetto.
The song itself was pretty flat in my opinion but this performance just shows what a great voice he has. His voice really does have soul and I think he would make a killer country singer after Idol is over. An 8.
Chris Daughtry - Suspicious Minds.
I like this song, but I wasn’t exactly thrilled by his performance. Big surprise, huh? Well, it’s (nearly) the same old shit from Chris, what more ccan I say. At least he didn’t butcher the song. Okay, I have to admit that I kinda enjoyed that performance (*pulls trigger in mouth*). A 7.5
Chris Daughtry - A Little Less Conversation.

His performance was okay, but the ending was truly a WTF moment. Bitch please, Jon Peter Lewis fucking owns this song. Enough is enough. The Chris novelty has truly gone past it’s expiry date. And stop eye fucking the camera. A 4.
Elliott Yamin - If I Could Dream.

If nobody told me, I would not think this was an Elvis song. He sounds bad in his rehearsals but what matters is his actual performance was great. Just simply great. And for once, Semencrust got one thing right : Elliott really has evolved in this competition. Bravo. An 8.5
Elliott Yamin - Trouble.
There’s nothing you can hate about this performance. Possibly his best performance ever throughout this competition. I am totally verklempt. A 10.
Katharine McPhee - Hound Dog mixed w/ All Shook Up
That was kinda entertaining, even though she ran out of breath near the end. I enjoyed the first half but I thought the end was way over the top. Not my favourite Kat performance. And Simon made sense.. she would be a great Mimi Rogers in Rent. A 6.5

Katharine McPhee - Can’t Help Falling In Love.

She oversung. Yet again. Izad sad. A 5.5

Prediction on who’ll be leaving tomorrow :

Brain : Katharine. She’s had too many inconsistent performances. She gives exceptionally great ones, then exceptionally bad ones. I don’t want to see her go just yet. She most definitely will be in the Bottom Two tomorrow.

Heart : Egghead. Need I say more?

Gut : I have a strong feeling America agrees with me that Egghead’s novelty has worn out. Goodbye Egghead.

Golden nugget of the week : “SHUT UP” ~ Simon to Paula (who keeps interrupting his commentaries) and followed by the audience’s cheering of approval.
